United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie met with refugees just a few miles from the Tunis-Libyan border on Tuesday.
The Oscar winner traveled to Shousha Camp at Ras Djir in Tunisia to help support the more than 440,000 people who have crossed into Tunisia to escape the violence in Libya. Jolie headed to the Tunisia-Libya Border Camp where she spoke with refugees who’ve been displaced because of unrest in Libya. She spoke of the need for greater international support, telling the press:
“The international community has done well to reinforce Tunisia’s remarkable relief effort. But with 2,000 people still crossing each day, we cannot let the funding dry up and need to sustain the momentum,” said the mom-of-six. “We would encourage others, individuals and governments, to continue to support and assist with the needs on the ground.”
“They’re waiting here with little hope, unable to return home and unsure of what’s to come. This constant cycle of displacement must finally come to an end.”
Jolie is no stranger to visiting troubled areas: She’s made previous trips to the Congo and Haiti, but the Shousha Camp in put the actress in a dangerous situation when her presence sparked a mini riot. According to an X17 photographer, the actress-humanitarian made her way through the camp as excited Libyan refugees chanted: “Angelina Jolie, we want to die for you!” The overwhelming crowd moved in on Jolie in a situation the photographer described as “intense.”
The Girl Interrupted star was forced to take shelter in a tent that guarded by 30 military personnel equipped with machine guns. Though there were no reported injuries, Jolie cancelled a visit to a hospital in Tunisia on security concerns.
