Rihanna has no interest in following in Whitney Houston’s cinematic footsteps…even if the recovering addict is one of the most talented vocalists to ever pick up a microphone.
The “Umbrella” hitmaker has reacted with a resounding snub after emerging as the frontrunner in Warner Bros. reboot of its 1992 romantic drama The Bodyguard. The film, which starred Kevin Costner as a Secret Service agent who falls in love with the famous singing star he’s hired to protect from a stalker, featured Houston in her acting debut. That feature also showcased Whitney’s blockbuster remake of the ’70s ballad “I Will Always Love You.”
Still, a rich history isn’t enought to interest Ri-Ri in swapping her red hair and skintight dresses for a turn a singer on the big screen. After all, that’s what she does in real life! The Grammy winner is set to showcase her acting talents (or lack thereof) in a film based on the classic board game Battleship (Opening 2012), but she isn’t interested in The Bodyguard remake because playing a musician wouldn’t be a “challenge.”
“…I want to separate the two. I hate it when singers do singing movies all the time because you can never look at them as anybody else,” Rihanna explains. “I want to play a character. My whole life is playing Rihanna so being a singer in a film won’t be a stretch for me. I like challenges and being an actor is playing a role, being able to step into somebody else’s shoes, that’s the excitement.”
Now that screenwriters Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer have been tapped to pen the new film, bosses at the WB have beefed up their search for the young female singer who will play the lead. Other names are also being linked to the film, include stripper-turned-actor Channing Tatum, Miley Cyrus and Beyonce, who is already due to star in Clint Eastwood’s remake of Judy Garland’s A Star Is Born.
