Aishwarya Rai Confirms 'Devi Chaudhurani' with Rituparno Ghosh

Aishwarya Rai has confirmed that she will be doing Rituparno Ghosh's Devi Chaudhurani, though neither she, nor Rituparno are sure when the film will kick off.

"Rituda wants to make Devi Chaudhurani only with me. I'm ready but now he's busy with his dance drama, Chitrangada—The Crowning Wish. Let's see when it happens," Aishwarya tells HT.

However Rituparno appeared to put the ball in Aishwarya's court for the delay, telling HT, "Yes, Devi Chaudhurani is happening. I've always wanted to make this film with Aishwarya but she's been really busy the last couple of years with her movies and more recently, Hugh Jackman. May be when she is free (we'll do the film)."

The film Devi Chaudhurani, an adaptation of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's 1884 novel, will be made in Hindi and Bengali.

Bankim Chandra's novel advocated armed rebellion against the British Empire as a means of gaining freedom and remained banned till India achieved independence.

In December 2010, Mumbai Mirror first reported that Aishwarya and Rituparno will be working in Devi Chaudhurani, after the actress and and Rituparno discussed the project during her visit to Kolkata with husband Abhishek Bachchan, where the couple was honored with Best Actor and Best Actress Awards for their film Raavan.

Aishwarya and Rituparno have earlier worked together in Chokher Bali and Raincoat.

Chokher Bali (2003) was an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's novel by the same name, and Raincoat an adaptation of the short story The Gift of the Magi by American writer O Henry.

The protagonist in Devi Chaudhurani is an exceptionally good looking woman who is non-conservative and ahead of her times. Her life's journey takes many intriguing twists and turns until the day she becomes one of the most powerful woman of Bengal.
