Deepika Padukone epitomizes the new age Indian girl who runs with the boys, but even she draws a line.
In December, the leggy lass agreed to make a cameo appearance in the film Dum Maro Dum and cavort to its title track, a remixed version of Dum Maro Dum from Dev Anand's Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), lip synched on screen by a zoned out Zeenat Aman.
Deepika was reportedly very excited to step into Zeenat Aman's shoes. Unfortunately for Deepika, the remixing was more comprehensive than she had bargained for - The lyrics of the song have also been changed.
Four days before the actual shoot at Mehboob Studios, Deepika found the lyrics too bold for her to be seen mouthing and demurred.
Eventually, Deepika and Dum Maro Dum director Rohan Sippy reached a compromise - The bold lyrics would be retained, but Deepika wouldn't be seen mouthing them!
According to a Mumbai Mirror source:
"Sippy told Deepika that every time she was expected to mouth the objectionable lyrics, her back would face the camera. Therefore she will only mouth lyrics that she is comfortable with."
According to the film's composer, Pritam Chakraborty, the song is "bold beyond words."
"We have composed it keeping today's very young and modern generation in mind. Big deal yaar, today's generation loves it this way."
Pritam's self serving justification of obscenity is in consonance with Bollywood's proclivity to attribute its greed to the younger generation's needs. They have been doing it since the 50s!
