Madonna Hard Candy Gym Mexico Facing Shutdown

Madonna flew into Mexico City Monday to open her new Hard Candy Fitness Gym, but patrons won’t be feeling the burn for long, if local officials have anything to say about it.

The club she launched this week is in danger of being shut down because it lacks a security plan and a land use permit, authorities said Wednesday.

Officials from the singer’s Hard Candy Fitness have until Friday to get a land use permit or they’ll be no more Zumba or Sweating to the Oldies going on at that gym, says Demetrio Sodi, the Chief of the Miguel Hidalgo Municipality where the gym is located.

“If they don’t have a land use permit, they will not be able to operate,” told Spanish-language station Televisa.

The gym also needs to present a certificate showing it has parking.

Hard Candy Mexico City is the first of ten fitness ventures The Material Girl is planning throughout South America, Europe, and Asia, in cooperation with her manager Guy Oseary and Mark Mastrov, founder of 24 Hour Fitness.

According to Mastrov, “Hard Candy Fitness will be a reflection of Madonna’s point of view and will reflect her input on every detail, including music space, light and other design cues. Madonna’s touch will be everywhere.”

“I’ve come to Mexico for years to do research, I love Mexican culture, architecture, food, music and art,” Madonna told Mexican newspaper Milenio Monday, dismissing any worries of danger due to drug violence. “A lot of places I go to are considered dangerous whether that’s Tel Aviv or Rio, that never stops me from going somewhere to put on a show. I’m not hindered by that. I have good security and I’m not worried about it,”
