jay Devgn is back to doing what he does best – action roles! In Singham he plays a tough cop, a role that could help you forget Dabangg's Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) for good.

Devgn, 41, is currently in Goa, shooting for the action thriller directed by Rohit Shetty.

His tough cop styling in the film includes a moustache and aviators, reminiscent of Salman Khan's Dabangg cop look.

"It's a film about men," explains Devgn. "'Singham' will mark the return of hardcore raw action to the cinemas with a lot of dialogue-baazi and machismo. It should sock a punch; it will connect to the man on the street because of its simple narrative and terrific action."

Director Rohit Shetty is also upbeat about the film.

"My hero Bajirao Singham (Ajay) is a simple police officer who is happy to toe the line till he is provoked by baddie Prakash Raj to show his ferocious side. And when Ajay does that, hell breaks loose," quips the stylish director.

The Shetty and Devgn team has done wonders at the box office earlier with 4 back to back blockbusters, the Golmaal series and 'All The Best'.

This movie also marks the return of the raw desi action seen in Indian film earlier.

"I have not used a single foreign fighter or imported any foreign equipment for my film. I personally feel indigenous action has a better impact than all the foreign stunts that people are obsessing about these days. As Indians, we identify with our style of raw action, which we have sidelined because some of us have suddenly developed an affinity to the West. To each his own, but for me what works is our own desi action," Shetty adds.

Other Bollywood stars currently working in films with cop roles include Aamir Khan in his yet to be titled home production directed by Reema Agti, and John Abraham in Force.

Singham is a remake of Tamil film of the same name starring Surya, Anushka Shetty and Prakash Raj. The film revolves around Singham, a Sub-Inspector, a brave and just policeman who serves in his hometown primarily to fulfill his father's wish. Singham settles every dispute in his town patiently with his words of wisdom and resorts to force only when the situation demands it. A city girl who comes on vacation to Nallore, falls in love with Singham.

Singham additionally co-stars southern hottie Kajal Aggarwal as the romantic lead opposite Ajay Devgn, and Prakash Raj who will reprise his role in the Hindi version.

Ajay's last action film was Khakee (2004), in which he played Yashwant Angre, a ruthless killer and a former police officer.

Singham is due for release on July 22.
