Neil Patrick Harris Tony Awards Host 2011

On Tuesday, How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris confirmed that he’ll return to host the 2011 Tony Awards, honoring the year’s best in theater live from New York’s Beacon Theatre on June 12.

“I’m honored and stoked to have been asked to host the 2011 Tony Awards. It should be a great show — we’ve got a fantastic mix of live performances, a few secret surprises, and since they’re closed for retooling, we’re using all the rigging equipment from Spider-Man. What could possibly go wrong?” he joked.

NPH succeeds Sean Hayes, who hosted the 2010 prizegiving. Harris was lauded for his hosting duties at the award show in 2009. He picked up an Emmy for the stint a few months later. The former Doogie Howser star has starred in three Broadway productions himself. He also directed a production of Rent in Los Angeles last summer.

“We’re thrilled to have Neil back as our host,” Tony executive producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss said after Neil’s appointment. “And we’re even happier he fits in the ‘Spider-Man’ rigging.”

The Book of Mormon, the musical from the creators of Comedy Central’s South Park, is the frontrunner going into next month’s theater award season. The show nabbed a leading 14 nominations when the list of nominees was released earlier this month.
