Portia DeGeneres opens up about falling for chat-show host

Ellen DeGeneres’ wife Portia has opened up about how she fell in love with the talk-show host and how she was forced to reveal her sexuality to her mother after she found a copy of The Joy Of Lesbian Sex under her bed. In an interview with Australian Women’s Weekly magazine to publicise her new autobiography, Unbearable Lightness: A Story Of Loss And Gain, the 37-year-old actress said she went weak at the knees when she first set eyes on the US comedienne at a photo-shoot in Hollywood. Talking about how she fell for DeGeneres, the Arrested Development star, who has legally taken the former American Idol judge’s surname to celebrate their union, said: “My knees went weak and I felt like I was shot through the heart with an arrow. I never thought I would experience that kind of feeling, being a lesbian. “That overwhelming experience of seeing someone across a room and falling in love with them.” The former Ally McBeal star said they didn’t get together at that time because she was still not comfortable about publicly revealing her sexuality. She said: “I was too nervous. I don’t regret it though, because clearly it wasn’t the right time for us to be together. “We both really, really liked each other and there was definitely a lot of chemistry there, but it was a ridiculous thought for me to be closeted and terrified of being discovered, and then date the most famous lesbian in the world. “It wasn’t going to happen.” The couple eventually got together in December 2004, and DeGeneres proposed with a three-carat pink diamond engagement ring soon afterwards. They eventually wed in a private ceremony in August 2008. Talking about her mother’s reaction to discovering that she was a lesbian, Portia said: “It wasn’t great and I think she regrets how she reacted. She has since really grown as a person and is a lot more accepting than she was back then.”
