If things had worked out differently the new Mrs. Brand might have tied the knot with John Mayer instead …or at least joined the long list of girls who have hooked up with him, realized he’s a giant douchebag, then had their hearts broken.
It turns out Katy and John were just starting to get cozy with each other when the singer met and fell in love with Russ after the comedian hosted the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
John and Katy had been exchanging flirty text messages for weeks before meeting up in a bar in New York the night before the VMAs.
“The night they met up they seemed so flirty and really into each other. They stayed at the bar late and left together!” a tattle told E! News this week.
But the following night Russell came to the rescue and saved Katy from John’s douchey grasp when he spotted her in the audience at the VMAs and openly flirted with her from the stage.
The rest, as they say, is history!
