Michelle Williams As Marilyn Monroe In “My Week With Marilyn”

Michelle Williams (Not the one from Destiny’s Child) will play screen legend Marilyn Monroe in a new movie based on the iconic actress’s 1956 London film shoot opposite Sir Laurence Olivier, producers said on Friday.

My Week with Marilyn — produced by The Weinstein Company and expected to open in 2011 — chronicles a week in the life of the troubled starlet, who spent seven days taking in 1950s Britain with tour guide Colin Clark, an assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl over a half century ago.

In the early summer of 1956, Colin, then 23, was a recent Oxford graduate eager for a career in the film business. He got his big break working as an assistant on the set of the film that famously united Olivier and Monroe, who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, playwright Arthur Miller. In 1996, Clark published his diary account of his time on the set in the memoir The Prince, the Showgirl and Me. He wrote about his week with Monroe — still one of the world’s best-known sex symbols more than 40 years after her death. — in the aptly-titled My Week with Marilyn several years after his first memoir.

The movie is the second film currently in the works about Marilyn Monroe. Earlier this year, Naomi Watts landed the coveted lead in the Hollywood adaptation of Blonde, Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 fictional biography of the star. That film is expected to open in 2012.

Williams, 30, earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the 2005 drama Brokeback Mountain. Her other credits include five seasons on TV’s Dawson’s Creek and a turn in the psychological thriller Shutter Island.

She edged out Golden Globe-nominated actress Scarlett Johansson for the Monroe role.
