Naomi Campbell: ‘My fellow models were like comrades’

Naomi Campbell has revealed how her fellow supermodels helped make sure that she was included in her early catwalk shows. The 40-year-old said some designers had not used black models before but Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen insisted she be included shows. Speaking to Interview, she explained, “Certain designers hadn’t used models of colour in their shows, and Christy and Linda said to them, ‘If you don’t take Naomi, then you don’t get us’. “My friends and comrades stuck up for me. That doesn’t happen in fashion.” She added that she was thankful for the bond the group shared, but said that kind of camaraderie is rare in the industry nowadays. “None of us ever cared about this word ’supermodel’. But we did like being together,” she said. ,”We were very supportive of one another, my group of girls, and I don’t think that happens so much nowadays.”
