Jimena Navarrete, Miss Universe 2010

Jimena Navarrete from Mexico was crowned Miss Universe 2010 on August 23 at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Jimena, 22, replaces Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela as the 59th pageant title holder; she is the second Miss Universe from Mexico.

As is customary, Stefania crowned Jimena the new Miss Universe and draped the sash on her. Jimena accepted the honor dressed in a flowing red strapless gown with matching heels.

The nine celebrity judges included figure skater Evan Lysacek, actresses Jane Seymour and Chynna Phillips; actors Chazz Palminteri and William Baldwin; magician Criss Angel; MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall; drummer Sheila E.; and supermodel Niki Taylor.

Jimena, though fluent in English, chose to use an interpreter to answer her questions.

Answering a question by Evan Lysacek on unsupervised use of internet, Jemina replied:

"I do believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time. We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family."

Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps was the runner-up and second runner-up was Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell.

Jimena, born and raised in Guadalajara in Jalisco, is 5 ft 8 1/2 in tall and has been modeling since age 15. Before competing for Miss Universe she won two beauty pageants in her home country - Nuestra Belleza Jalisco on July 16, 2009 in her hometown, and the national title of Nuestra Belleza México on September 20, 2009 in Mérida.

Navarrete's Miss Universe package includes an undisclosed salary, a luxury New York apartment with all living expenses paid, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy with housing after her year long reign, plus jewelry, clothes and shoes.

Navarrete will travel throughout the world making special appearances on behalf of the Miss Universe Organization, its sponsors and affiliated charities.
