The Sitch, Sidelined By A Show Line! On tap to earn a whopping $5 million by the end of 2010, fitness trainer-turned-Jersey Shore stud Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is one of the most bankable stars on reality TV, but he will not be making any bank on his famous nickname.
The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has rejected an application Sorrentino, 29, filed earlier this year seeking to trademark the name “The Situation” in order to market a line of T-shirts and underwear, TheSmokingGun.com said Thursday. Government officials say they are not able to offer Mike a copyright because of the similarities between his application and a trademark already issued to a Memphis-based clothing and shoe retailer in 2009.
Lawyers for The Sitch have contested the rejection. However, an examining attorney for the USPTO would not be persuaded. Simon Teng cites a “likelihood of confusion” in his refusal of the trademark. Sorrentino’s rejection comes after castmate Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi was denied a trademark for her nickname. In August, the USPTO ruled that “Snooki” was too similar to a registered titled of a children’s book, Adventures of Snooky, about a cat who falls overboard while fishing.
